You can't fake a place: what Santa Teresa taught me about building a brand somewhere real.
After running a lifestyle brand here in Santa Teresa — and working with some of the town's staple local businesses — I've learned one thing above all else.
You can't fake Santa Teresa.
I've watched plenty of brands try to break into this town and never quite land. They post the right-looking content, they say the right-sounding things, and still the local community keeps them at arm's length. They never get seen as real. And the reason is almost always the same: they don't actually know what Santa Teresa is.
Living somewhere is a kind of knowledge you can't shoot in three days
As a local, I can tell you which beach is wall-to-wall tourists and which one is firing on a specific swell direction. Where to get a genuinely good cappuccino, and where to get a proper matcha. Where to find the best casado in town. Which surf schools are actually worth your money and which ones just have the biggest signs. Where the schools are. Where to buy a real surfboard, not a wall decoration. The best spot to fish. Where to go ride a horse down the beach at golden hour. Which place has the party tonight. Where the tide pools are calm enough for kids. And exactly where to stand to catch a Nicoya sunset that stops you in your tracks.
None of that is on a map. You learn it by being here — by living the seasons, the swells, the rhythms of the town. And it's exactly the stuff a brand needs to feel like it belongs.
Brands that don't have that knowledge come to Santa Teresa and try to emulate the feeling. They copy the aesthetic, borrow the vibe, reach for the postcard version. And most of the time, they fail. I've watched restaurants, stores, hotels, and bars all try it and come up short — not because they didn't work hard, but because they were building from the outside in. They hadn't lived here. They didn't know what the place was actually about.
The postcard isn't the place
Here's the trap. Santa Teresa comes with a ready-made image — surf, sunsets, jungle, slow living, pura vida. It's beautiful, and it's real. But it's also the surface, and everyone already has it. A sunset with a "pura vida" caption isn't Santa Teresa. It's the idea of Santa Teresa that someone who's never been here would recognize.
The town people actually love — the one locals are loyal to — lives underneath that. It's specific. It's the right casado, the right beach on the right day, the surf school that actually cares, the spot only regulars know. A brand that only reaches for the postcard will always look like a visitor. A brand that knows the real place gets to feel like a local.
This is where being from here changes everything
As locals who were born and raised here, we can make the content people are actually looking for. Not just a pretty sunset with a tired caption — but the right thing, at the right moment, for the right audience. Content that knows the difference between the beach the tourists flood and the one the surfers wait for. That kind of specificity is what makes a brand read as genuine here instead of imported.
And that's the whole idea behind OLA. We don't fly in, shoot for three days, and call it authentic. We live here. We're Costa Rican — born here, raised here, cédula in hand. This coast isn't a chapter of a nomad year for us, something to photograph for a while before moving on to the next place. It's home. So when we help a brand tell its story in Santa Teresa or anywhere else in Costa Rica, it comes from the inside — from people who'll still be here long after the season ends.
That difference matters more than it sounds. A lot of people pass through this coast, stay a year or two, and start to feel like they own it — right up until the next best thing calls and they're gone. A place can't be borrowed like that. It has to be lived. And the brands that feel truly rooted here are the ones built with people who are actually rooted here.
If you're building something real here, let's make sure it feels that way
Here's the truth: your competitors can copy your aesthetic. They can borrow your color palette, mimic your captions, and shoot the same sunset from the same lookout. The one thing they can't copy is a brand that genuinely belongs to this place — because that has to be lived, not staged.
That's what we bring. Whether you were born on this coast or you're a newcomer building something real and committed here, we help your brand look and feel as rooted as the place deserves — so the locals trust you, the right visitors find you, and nobody scrolling past can tell you're anything but the genuine article.
If you're opening, growing, or reinventing something in Santa Teresa and you want it to feel like it truly belongs here — not like it flew in for the season — talk to us. We'll help you build a presence rooted in the real place, not the postcard. And we'll do it as the people who actually call this coast home.
Say ola. Let's build something that belongs here.
